Girl's Night Out

Part 2

A further continuation of our Chad & Ronnie less Chad & Ronnie story

--------------------------

The Dullard's Corners area of Parrodipolis, a few minutes before 11 p.m on a friday night.
Just off a main thoroughfare, there stands a building. When it was originally built in the late 19th century it was used as local volunteer firehouse. But when that closed up the building had been used for a few different things. It's currently a late night Pub & Eatery.

Catherine Gillespie casually walks in through the decades old wooden door & greeted with a few hello's. She smiles & waves back. Catherine is quickly followed with unease by Jane Tarzania.

"Are you sure we could park there?" She asks nervously.

"Sure." Catherine said. She didn't know.

Catherine with her companion for the night walked past the sign that asked them to wait to be seated & sat down in one of the booths that look like they were out of a 1950's roadside diner. Their both was near one of the outer windows. The Vinyl covered seat made some noise as they sat down. Jane looked a bit embarrassed after one such noise.

"It was the plastic." She mumbled out. Catherine just smiled.

They sat there for a few moment in silence, Catherine was looking around at the various knic knacks cluttering up the walls. Jane just starred out the rainy window.

"So, what do you want to eat?" Catherine asked.

That caught Jane a bit off guard & then said "Don't they bring us Menus' or anything like that?"

"Nope. They just got the dry erase boards over the counter to order from." Catherine said & pointed over to the corner where three somewhat large White boards with different menu items written in various colors & varying degrees of legibility were.

"I feel like the 3. But, then the 6 comes with a side of Sourdough & my choice of Sushi." Catherine said with some glee. "Now, the 10 has Bacon & who doesn't like that?"

Jane starts to try to read the boards they appear to be a mishmash Diner staples with more Ethnocentric food with a few other random items thrown in. There were a few numbered meals & a couple of a eccentrically named meals, too.

"Hmmm.. So much good food & I haven't even gotten what I want to drink." Catherine said & then turned her attention back to Jane. "Any idea what you want to have?"

Jane turned back & answered "No, not really."

"Well, let's see they have!" Catherine said & peered over to the boards. "They've got that Chicken Fried Steak you like so much & you could have a mug of your choice of prepackaged teas' to go with it?"

Catherine smiled, Jane didn't.

As a minute or two later, Jane asked. "What are we doing?"

"I thought ordering food but what do you think we're doing? This is not a date, I'm not Gay if that's what your thinking."

"No. I didn't think that. It's just why are we here?"

"It was close & they got good food at cheap affordable prices." Catherine said.

Jane sighed & then said. "Did Chad or Ronnie put you up to this?"

"No." Catherine protested.

"Then why did you come over?"

"Like I said. I was just soaking up the ambient energies of the Universe & with my mind all a blank a thought came to me..."

Jane interrupts. "So, I was the first thing to pop into your mind?"

"Sure. The Universe has a way of bringing things to your mind to need to be thought of."

"Why not Chad?"

"I don't know. Maybe he didn't need thinking about?"

"Maybe." Jane mumbles & turns her attention back to the boards.

More Silence. That was until Catherine starts to hum along with the music playing over a series of speakers placed about the restaurant.

Jane turns back towards Catherine & sits there looking at her. Catherine smiles & continues to hum.

"Why are we here?" Jane asks.

Catherine stops humming & says "I thought we already went over this?"

"We did. But, last time didn't give me a good answer. Let me put it this way: Why do you think the Universe brought me to your blank mind?"

"Not sure really. Maybe the Universe knew you were going to spend your friday night alone?"

"I like being alone. Being around Ronnie so much makes a person value your alone time."

"Ok. But being alone is lonely."

"If we weren't here doing this, what would you being doing?"

Catherine checks her watch. "I don't know. I might be home watching VH1's Best Week Ever, I might be asleep, I might be Dr. Spock's back up band!" Catherine said with a smile.

Jane raised one of her eyebrows after that last comment. "What?"

"Sorry. Song reference that just popped into my head."

"Ok." Jane said but before she could continue on their waitress approached the table.

"Hi. I'm Sarah. I'll be your serve today, tonight, for the moment. Do you guys know what you want?"

Catherine looked to Jane, she nodded her head & Catherine said "Yes. Yes, we do."

"Ok. What'll you have?"

"I'd like the 12."

"Hmmm... The Zombie Combo meal. How do you want your brains?"

"Still thinking."

"And to drink?"

"Sprite."

"Excellent & for you, miss?" Sarah said turning her attention to Jane.

"Yes. I'll have the Ruben."

"Which? We have the Ruben Studdard for a big eaters, the Ruben James, which is the classic & the Ruben Patterson which is a little more sporty."

"The Ruben James."

"Fine & to drink?"

"Water."

"Ok. I'll be back with your food later." Sarah said & walked off.

Once she was some distance away, Jane began the questioning again "Is that your real hair color?"

"That's sort of a personal question."

"Oh. Sorry."

"It's ok. Just messing with ya. Black is not my natural color, mine is a sandy blond with it leaning towards the blonder side but just sandy enough to not be straight blond."

"Why dye it?"

"No reason really. Just thought I'd go for a change & black seemed like the logical choice. The one downside is it's a pain to keep it solid. Darn you, hair growth!"

"And the blue streak you had?"

"Well, it's a side effect of my mutant power, when I swear parts of my hair turn blue." Catherine said quite seriously but then broke down & smiled showing she was kidding. "The streak was also just for the change but to keep the bright blue the way I liked it was even more of a pain so I stopped having it done."

"Ok."

"So, is your hair au natural?" Catherine asked.

"Yes. I've thought about getting highlights but i've been to scared to get them."

"Why? I think you'd look great lightened up."

Jane wasn't sure if Catherine was still talking about her hair but replied "Thanks" anyways.

A few moments of awkward silence & then Jane blurts out "Accordion." Jane blushes a bit.

"Yes, that's a word & an musical instrument." Catherine said slightly amused.

"I noticed you had one in the back seat of car. Is that how you met Chad?"

"No. I didn't meet him in the back seat of my car but It was at an Amazing Accordion Appreciators of America meeting."

"Amazing?"

"Yeah. We couldn't just be Accordion Appreciators since AA was already taken or be Accordion Appreciators of America since Triple A was taken, too. But AAAA wasn't so we became the Amazing Accordion Appreciators of America, we also some times use Awesome instead of Amazing, it all depends on how we feel that day. But, that's going off track: we're talking Chad. I had heard about him & seen him at a few of the meetings but had yet to talk to him until the heated debate a few months ago over playing Acoustically versus going Electric. Chad was speaking out for Pro-Electric while others were firmly Acoustically minded. But, then Chad always been kind of a Rebel in the Accordion circles."

"There are Accordion circles?"

"Sure. The Accordion has a large underground following. But, after the debate I got to talking to him during the refreshment period of the meeting. So, we were talking about..."

Jane interrupted "Wait a minute. Chad talks to you?"

"Yeah. But, then I'm one of the few select people of out the Accordion community he'll talk to. You know one of the few others."

"Ronnie."

"Yup."

"So, Chad does speak to people?"

"Yes. He's one of the more vocal people at the meetings. It's almost amazing how much he knows about the Accordion. There are these bizarre, weird little known facts that only few know that he'll just whip out. It's amazing to listen to him when he's on a roll. I almost think it's kind of funny that he doesn't talk in public. But, with Ronnie who can get a word in edge wise?"

The two women share a laugh.

"After a few months of seeing each other casually Chad want to make me his girlfriend officially."

"You met his parents?"

"No. I met Ronnie, it was over Pancakes. I wasn't shocked by Ronnie's appearance given that I go to various type of conventions where Ronnie might look almost normal. We talked, while Chad sat there either eating his order, fiddling with his accordion or watching other people in the restaurant. I believe this conversation was were Ronnie started his dislike of me. But, I half expected that. Ronnie has seemed to be a rather selfish person & me entering the picture takes valuable Chad time away from him or he might secretly like me & his apparent hatred is his way of masking it. But, I don't know."

Then, the food came & all talking stopped for awhile.
